Can't close back door without turning the knob

I have a Schlage door knob.  The only way I can close my back door is by turning the knob because the latch part won't retract into the door.

Try taking the knob out of the door and spraying the whole latching mechanism with WD40 or some kind of lubricant. There is a few moving parts in there that can get bound up. Hope this helps. Don't forget to leave feed back.
First issue, you should NEVER use any kind of spray lubricant on locks of any kind, if you must use lubricants (they are very rarely needed on locks or latches) use a dry one like graphite. Reason being any type of wet lubricant will attract dirt and dust and stick to it, eventually the parts will seize up. It the latch is not retracting on its own as you close the door (i.e. you MUST turn the handles to retract it) consider these possible causes. 1: Is the latch installed properly, and is it the correct one for this lockset? The angled part of the latch MUST be facing the direction of travel when closing, it will go in either way, but will only work properly in that direction. 2. Does it align properly with the strike plate? If its not contacting the plate or the plate is missing, loose hinges, loose lock, etc.c the self latching will not engage. 3: Is it broken/seized jamming etc. A close inspection will reveal any of these issues.
